| 27 Jul 2009 | TM Lahti | Loading...You have very wonderful style, Mr. Makin. You should offer your drawings to a RP-fantasy-magazines or such. Very good works you have here to form a portfolio from! Matthew Makin replies: "Thanks very much Interesting suggestion too - I might have to look into that..." | |
| 28 Jul 2009 | Jennifer Huggins | Loading... Now that I have taken the time to look at the pieces in your gallery, I would have to say that I am thoroughly flabbergasted. Every piece is crisp and unique with a hint of flair. Proportions and compositions in your work are nicely done.
The work you are able to produce is very intriguing and dare I say addicting. I just can’t seem to get enough of looking at your art pieces. I always seem to find something new that I could spot before. It’s all very well executed. Matthew Makin replies: "Wow thanks Jennifer I’m really flattered you like my drawings so much. It’s nice you had a good look at my work and noticed the little details I like to put into them. I might ask you for some tips on using photoshop at some point if you don’t mind as you seem really adept in it’s use. I have a wacom tablet but have neglected to use it of late and I have some pictures I’d like to do that can only really be done in colour and I am still at a very basic stage using photoshop..."
| 29 Jul 2009 | Jennifer Huggins | Loading... It would be my pleasure to administer any help with Photoshop as you desire. Wacom tablets help immensely when one wants to color a picture or drawing in Photoshop. I own one myself.
If you have any questions or inquiries, just let me know and I will answer them to the best of my ability. First things first though, what type of art are you considering doing with Photoshop? Painting and Airbrushing, drawing, simple coloring, photo manipulation, or other? I am adept at the first three and know some about the last. From the work that you do, I would guess that you would excel in painting and airbrushing/drawing.
Having a traditional art background helps vastly when learning the techniques for painting digitally, so you’ll do great.
Good luck and I wish you the best.
Matthew Makin replies: "I’m looking at painting and airbrushing some pictures. I’ve tried scanning in line drawings then attempting to colour them but find it very fiddly. I have seen that some people just start laying down colour then refine the image by erasing and working from loose, broad patches of colour to tighter details so I may try that. I have difficulty laying down colour as if I lift my pen, any area I go over that has already been coloured gets darker even after I play around with opacity settings.
I’d be interested to know how you go about producing your works..."

| 2 Aug 2009 | Jennifer Huggins | Loading... With a wacom tablet I’m able to draw the sketch onto the computer, so I don’t have to worry about scanning a drawing. On Photoshop, you’re able to make things that you draw onto separate layers, so it’s a bit cleaner than traditional art. So, I make a new layer above the background layer and draw my sketch in that. (Go to layer--new layer or the key command is shft ctrl n, to get a new layer) I then make another layer for my coloring and place it under the sketch layer. (So you can still see the sketch while you’re coloring)
There are several different methods on coloring, so of course mine is most certainly not the best way. I look at digital painting like other traditional artists look at their paintings; start with the background and paint the items in the front of the foreground last. With people I paint their skin base color first and then I add details; a few different shades of colors to make the painting seem life-like. I then proceed to paint the base color for the most covered piece of clothing and add detail to that. I do this process until I end up with the item in the forefront. Note that I do this all on one layer, but if you feel more comfortalbe doing it on separate layers go right ahead.
As to the problem with your pen, try keeping the opacity at 100 and paint a stroke. If you paint another stroke on top of it and it becomes darker, then look at the settings of the pen. It’s located near the top of the screen and it’s next to the opacity/ flow menus. It should be on normal and if it’s not, that might explain why your pen is acting that way. If it still keeps on acting up, tell me and I’ll help any way I can.
If you have any more questions, feel free and ask. Cheers!
Matthew Makin replies: "Hey Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to reply I’ll have to get the wacom out again and have another crack at some coloured works armed with this new information..."
